Alex Rodriguez is rumored to have made a play for Derek Jeter's longtime girlfriend when the pairs paths crossed earlier this week at a Manhattan based charity event.

The New York Daily News reports, with Jeter nowhere in sight, the man who now trails Hall of Fame great Willie Mays on the all-time home run list by a single blast, posed for at least one photo with the Sports Illustrated swim suit model.

The newspaper adds Davis was on hand on behalf of Czech model Petra Nemcova's Happy Heart Fund charity, while A-Rod was representing the Boys and Girls Club of America. During their interaction, Rodriguez reportedly put his arm around Davis as event co-founder Steven Starker lingered nearby.

In a time that was considered a golden age for American League shortstops, Rodriguez and Jeter were once close before the relationship started to deteriorate as the new millennium approached. One former Yankees teammate described their relationship during their time in New York as simply "cordial enough."

The source told the Daily News A-Rod appeared to be on a mission to "prove himself as a good guy" in the years after taking an unveiled shot at Jeter in a 20001 Esquire Magazine profile.

"(He's) has never had to lead," Rodriguez reflected back then. "He can just go and play and have fun. He hits second -- that's totally different than third or fourth in the lineup. You go into New York, you wanna stop Bernie (Williams) and Paul (O'Neill). You never say, 'Don't let Derek beat us.' He's never your concern."

Recently, Davis told reporters she tries to refrain from reading all the tabloids when it comes to her and Jeter's relationship, including recent rumors that the two might be engaged and planning to wed.

"I really try not to read a lot of the stuff," she told the Daily News. "It's more annoying to hear it from friends and family because I am like, 'don't you think I would tell you if that was the case, you're not going to hear it (somewhere else).'"
