Maria Bello Movies: 'McFarland, USA' Actress Reveals How Her Loved Ones Embraced Their 'Modern Family'
Maria Bello has been openly gay and an activist for quite some time now. But it was an op-ed she did for The New York Times, "Coming Out as a Modern Family," that got her some stirring attention from the mainstream media.
This comes on the heels of the Bruce Jenner interview with Diane Sawyer, which he revealed to the world that he is a woman and he plans to slowly transition.
Bello spoke with The Huffington Post about the Jenner interview and praised him for his revelation and communicating it to the world.
"For him to say 'you can't put a label [on me]' is fantastic," Bello told Huff Post. "The only labels you should have are the ones you give yourself. Life isn't static, and we have to create better labels to embrace who we are."
In an interview with Fox News, Bello fielded some questions in regards to her New York Times op-ed. She described telling her son Jack that she was in love with her friend, Clare, as an inspiration for writing the essay.
"I didn't find it brave at all to be honest," Bello told Fox News.
"After my son said, 'Whatever, love is love, Mom. Shout it out to the world.' A few months later we were at his father's birthday that Clare, and Jack and I threw. My parents flew in for it, his family and all of our friends. I looked around this room and I thought to myself there is so much love here. We are so lucky, and they are all my partners in a different way. Someone said to me, 'How long were you with Dan?' I said, 'Well, we're still together but in a different way.'"
When they asked her if she would be willing to chronicle her "modern family" in a docu-series, she was less than hip to the idea.
"I have to tell you my favorite channel is HGTV. It's my go-to. The only thing I would ever do is remodel homes or decorate homes or fix up old homes. Not my private life," Bello said.
According to Page Six, Bello's book, titled "Whatever... Love is Love," was greeted with a party, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, Ashley McDermott and Mario Batali.
Chef Batali whipped up a spaghetti dinner for the event, which included 150 friends.
