Tesla will soon be offering batteries for homes and businesses, the company announced Thursday.

Tesla Motors wants to be more than just a luxury car maker, USA Today reports.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the Powerwall Home Battery and the business system called the Powerpack will help wean the world off of gas and oil for power.

"This is within the power of humanity to do," Musk told a large crowd gathered at Tesla's design center. "We have done things like this before. It is not impossible."

People who live in rural areas, or areas not on the power grid, could really flock to the Powerwall system. Normally homes that were off the power grid had to be served by wires.

The cost of a basic 10 kilowatt-hour Powerwall home system would be $3,500, according to Musk. The systems would use very similar technology that is found in the Tesla electric cars. Forbes notes that a $4,000 AC-DC inverter will be needed as well as professional installation.

"In a lot of ways it's taking derivative technology from the car," he told reporters.

People who have solar systems already in their homes are expected to be buyers of the Powerwall system. They will then be able to store energy from their solar systems and power their own homes after the sun goes down using the stored energy.

Tesla showed off what the batteries will look like, noting that they will be six-inch thick and can be noted to walls. Musk plans to purchase several of them for installation in his own home.

The Powerwall batteries will go on sale later this year in the U.S. and will be marketed by a division called Tesla Energy. Buyers in foreign countries will be able to purchase Powerwall shortly after.
