Homeless Person Leaves 18-Cent Offering Along With Touching Note To North Carolina Church
A modest donation given to a North Carolina church last Sunday has touched an entire community.
Last week, Rev. Patrick Hamrick of the First United Methodist Church in Charlotte says that a homeless person left 18 cents in a collection plate along with a simple, but powerful message.
"Please don't be mad, I don't have much. I'm homeless. God Bless," wrote the anonymous giver on a white envelope that enclosed their change.
Hamrick, who heads the church's finance ministry, says he was stunned by the note and gracious offering.
"We read it and it touched us," he told People. "The message implies the giver thought we might be mad. We didn't feel mad at all. It took some bravery to write that down and say 'I'm homeless, but I still want to give.'"
Hamrick says the church, which is located in uptown Charlotte, serves 150 homeless people breakfast on Sunday mornings as a part of their "Muffins Ministry." The guest are then invited to stay for the church services.
"I picture that individual reaching into his or her pocket and pulling out that dime, nickel and three cents and dropping it in the envelope, writing that note and sticking it in the offering plate," he says. "That could really have been a sacrificial gift. That could have been all that person had in his or her pocket that day."
Hamrick said that many community members have been moved to help the giver after he posted a picture of the message on the church's Facebook page.
"I think there could be a happy ending here," he says. "I have a feeling there's been enough support that this person could get some assistance. But we don't know who this individual is," he said.
For the individual, the money "could have been everything in his or her pocket," added the reverend, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
