Age did not stop a Manchester, New Hampshire, man from defending himself when a robber tried to take his wallet over the weekend, WMUR, the city's ABC affiliate, reported.

Arthur Kamberis, a 95-year-old World War II veteran, was confronted by a man on Sunday morning as he was walking home after picking up a prescription for his wife.

"He wanted to reach in this pocket to get the wallet," Kamberis said.

But the nonagenarian had no intention of giving up his possessions and instead lashed out with his cane.

"I hit him three or four times on the arm, and then, you know, what the cop told me, 'You should have hit him on the head,'" Kamberis said. "I had my credit card, my license, my grandchildren's pictures in (the wallet), and all sorts of stuff it would have been wicked for me to replace."

An unidentified bystander witnessed what was happening and went to help the victim, which is when the would-be robber ran off.

Manchester Police said they were circulating the surveillance pictures to surrounding towns in hopes that someone will recognize the perpetrator; they are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 602-688-8711 in reference to case No. 15-7297.

Authorities always recommend surrendering goods during robberies to avoid escalation, Lt. Brian O'Keefe noted.

"Mr. Kamberis was very fortunate," O'Keefe said. "He fought off the bad guy and left in one piece."

Kamberis explained that he had had trouble understanding the "mumbling" robber at first and even offered him some loose change.

"He was not aggressive," the veteran said. "He didn't lay his hands on me."

The Manchester resident promised that he would not change his routine due to the incident -- with one exception: "When I go out alone, my .357 Magnum will be with me all the time when I'm alone, because I cannot protect myself other than the cane."
