‘Supergirl’ News: Superhero Show Coming to CBS Next Fall; Find Out Who Is in the Cast
Comic book superheroes have made quite a comeback over the last decade, with projects popping up on TV, film and streaming services.
Until recently, Marvel Comics has held a stranglehold over the industry's video and film universe. But now, with the production of several Superman, Batman and Green Lantern films, DC is poised to regain the top spot.
Enter Supergirl. The project has been picked up by CBS for production of a TV series that outlines her many twists and turns as a young lady into her current age of 24, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
"Glee" actress Melissa Benoist has been cast to portray the title character, and the show has also picked up Calista Flockhart, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, Faran Tahir and Dean Cain.
Although it is unclear if Cain has been cast to reprise his role as Superman, which he played in the '90s alongside Terri Hatcher, it has been revealed Flockhart will play Cat Grant. Additionally, Brooks has been cast as James (Jimmy) Olsen, Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Tahir as The Commander.
Helen Slater ("The Legend of Billie Jean"), who played the title character back in 1984, has been cast to play a role in the series, though it is still unknown what character she will play.
The premise for the series is based upon the comic books, where Kara Zor-El was born on Krypton but escapes before it is destroyed. She comes to Earth and is raised by the Danver family, where she is renamed Kara Danver. Her adoptive family encourages her to keep her powers a secret. But when she turns 24, she embraces her powers, much like her famous cousin Superman, and embarks upon perilous journeys.
She hides her identity by wearing nerdy glasses and keeps her hair pulled back.
According to Variety, her costume has been designed by Oscar-winning designer Colleen Atwood. Atwood also designed the suits for "The Flash" and "Arrow," which have been playing on the CW network.
