The Season 8 finale of "The Big Bang Theory" ended with an emotional cliffhanger as the couples on the show reached major turning points in their relationships.

During the finale, which was titled "The Commitment Determination," Leonard and Penny finally decided to take the next step in their relationship after Sheldon pointed out that they neglected to set a wedding date over a year after they got engaged. In response, the couple initially became defensive and argued that they were too busy to plan for a wedding. Leonard even argued that, since they love each other, "It doesn't matter if we get married tomorrow or a year from now or 50 years from now," reports Cinema Blend.

However, Penny later suggested that they should elope in Las Vegas, and Leonard agreed. While driving to Vegas, Leonard began having second thoughts confessed to Penny that he had kissed another woman years ago when he was drunk. Penny assumed that he told her this in order to sabotage their plans to elope, but Leonard assured her that he's totally committed to the idea, and they agree to go through with it.

On the other hand, Sheldon and Amy's slow-moving relationship came to a dramatic end. After dating for years, Amy told Sheldon that she was fed up and frustrated with the lack of growth in their relationship and needed space.

"Being your girlfriend is so challenging, emotionally, physically," Amy told Sheldon via video chat. "This isn't easy to say because I love you, but I need some time to take a step back and reevaluate our situation. I hope you understand."

Devastated by the breakup, Sheldon began talking to the Gollum figurine on his desk and pulls out an engagement ring that he planned to give Amy.

"Well Gollum, you're an expert on rings. What do I do with this one?" Sheldon asked the little figurine, according to Fox News.
