When Assassin's Creed Unity was revealed in 2014, many fans of the video game were disappointed that no female character was made available to the players. It seems game developer Ubisoft finally decided to listen to fans' recommendation as rumors have begun to circulate about the possibility of a female playable character being introduced in the next iteration of the series.

Not one but two playable characters would be available to gamers when Assassin's Creed Syndicate –formerly called Assassin's Creed Victory – hits the consoles, reported Kotaku.

According to a leaked concept art released to Kotaku, the two main characters would be male and female, and the would be named Jacob and Evie. They are described as siblings who lived in the time of Victorian London. The two are connected with the "criminal underworld" in London during the Victorian era.

This is not the first time that a female character appeared in the video game. Aveline was an assassin in the Assassin's Creed Liberation title which came out in 2012. However, Evie would be the first main female character that gamers could play as.

In 2014, the developers at Ubisoft earned the criticism of fans when they failed to come out with a female character for Assassin's Creed Unity. The followers did not take kindly to creative director Alex Amancio's reason for not including one.

In an interview with Polygon, Amancio revealed that female assassins were initially part of the plan but the company admitted that "reality of production" prevented them from continuing with it.

"It's double the animation, it's double the voices, all that stuff double the visual assets," said the creative director. "Especially because we have customizable assassins. It was really a lot of extra production work."

For the said title, players in the co-op mode could customize their gear but their identity for the game remains to be Arno, the lead character of the series.

Amancio added, "Because of that, the common denominator was Arno. It's not like we could cut our main character, so the only logical option we had, was to cut the female avatar."

Level designer Bruno St-Andre hinted at the possibility that female characters would appear in future titles of the series.

He said, "I cannot speak for the future of the brand, but it was dear to the production team, so you can expect that it will happen eventually in the brand."

While the upcoming game would feature two playable characters, some reports circulated that Jacob would be the main character. However, players would be able to switch from him to Evie between missions.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate will be released on May 12, and it will be available to PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One soon.
