What can Homeland fans expect for Season Four of the hit Showtime original series?

With star Damian Lewis on the way out after his character Nicholas Brody was killed off in grotesque fashion in Season Three finale "The Star," what happens to Homeland going forward? Well, with an upcoming pregnancy and pending cast changes, the show's writers have plenty of work cut out for them. Homeland creator Alex Gansa only shared a tidbit of what to look forward to in Season Four during an interview with Variety.

"Obviously Carrie is going to have to deal with the child. We never thought she was going to have a miscarriage or have an abortion. This child is how Brody spiritually remains in the show ... The other idea running around our brains Is that it will be really interesting to see Carrie do what she was trained to do -- be a case officer in a foreign country. That seems to us like a really interesting place to start to reinvent the show," remarked Gansa.

Gansa is talking about Carrie Mathison's upcoming CIA assignment in Istanbul, Turkey. While Mathison received a big time promotion, another series regular, Saul Berenson, played by Mandy Patinkin, was forced out of "The Company." However, Carrie's longtime mentor and protector in the CIA is now working as a private intelligence contractor. Could it be that Gansa and the writers send Berenson to Istanbul on an assignment? It's possible that Mathison requests his services and a reunion of sorts takes place. It won't make sense to put Patinkin's character out on a island, so to speak, and not have a prominent role going forward. One star character, Brody, is already out of the picture so it would be wise for the show to keep some familiar faces around.

Or perhaps the impossible happens and Brody's character is revived. Homeland through the years has become known, and perhaps mocked, for its myriad of implausible plot twists. Brody's character arc has been at the center of it all -- from military hero to supposed terrorist to politician and more. How can one man wear so many hats? Maybe Brody will still be in the show, via never before seen flashbacks. After all, Damian Lewis could use the paycheck, right?
