Windows 10 Release Date, Features & News: Microsoft Wants New Edge Browser to Be Faster, More Secure Than Internet Explorer
The upcoming Windows 10 will bring a new browser from Microsoft.
Microsoft will call the new broswer Edge Web, and the company plans to make it more secure, CNet reports.
Edge is designed specifically for Windows 10, and it is intended to be a faster, more secure browser than Internet Explorer. Edge will act similar to its rival web browser with a customized home page offering links and thumbnails for frequently visited websites. Edge will also offer Web-based apps and support for Chrome and Firefox extensions.
Internet Explorer has been criticized for allowing security vulnerabilities. Because of this, Microsoft is focusing on security with Edge.
Edge will be the default browser for Windows 10, but it will not replace Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer 11 will still work, and users may need to access it for compatibility issues.
Edge plans to prevent password stealing by websites that look legitimate by creating a single-sign-in service. This will eliminate the need to enter plain text passwords to each site that asks for one.
The Edge Web browser will also use a new rendering engine called Microsoft EdgeHTML. This is a more modern engine that helps Web developers defend their websites against cyberattacks. Edge will also use Microsoft's SmartScreen, a technology that checks the "reputation" of websites and downloads to ensure they are safe and secure.
Since Internet Explorer has been susceptible to attacks in certain extensions like ActiveX and VB Script, Edge has removed these extensions, according to Computer World. Microsoft will instead use HTML5 for Edge and will incorporate an extension-based model that will use HTML and Javascript.
Internet Explorer was a part of Windows that allowed bugs to affect the rest of the computer. Edge will be a stand-alone browser that runs in its own isolated, protected space.
"Microsoft Edge is rebooting our browser extension model, allowing it to run its content processes in app containers, not just as a default, but all the time," the Edge team said. "Thus every Internet page that Microsoft Edge visits will be rendered inside an app container, the latest and most secure client-side app sandbox in Windows."
Microsoft will even reward users that find security issues in the browser. Those who report bugs with Edge can report them to Microsoft and receive a payment.
"Microsoft Edge is a brand new browser, with new goals and requirements," the team said. "This has allowed us to include these security enhancements, both brand new security features, and moving older opt-in features to be always-on. For this reason, we believe Microsoft Edge will be the most secure Web browser that Microsoft has ever shipped."
