'American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson: ‘Cosby Show’ Alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner to Play AC Cowlings
Malcolm-Jamal Warner has joined the cast of FX network and Ryan Murphy's "American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson," reports Variety.
Warner, 44, will play A.C. Cowlings, the former professional football player and best friend of O.J. Simpson. Cowlings drove the white Ford Bronco carrying Simpson in the notorious televised police chase.
"American Crime Story" has an all-star cast, including Cuba Gooding Jr. playing the role of Simpson; John Travolta, who will portray Robert Shapiro; David Schwimmer will star as Robert Kardashian; Selma Blair takes the role of Kris Kardashian; Connie Britton plays Faye Resnick; Courtney Vance takes the role of Johnnie Cochran; and Sarah Paulson depicts Marcia Clark.
The miniseries will have 10 episodes produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions.
"The Cosby Show" alum has a long-time relationship with FX and Murphy. He recurred on "American Horror Story: Freak Show" and "Sons of Anarchy." He also had a long gig on Season 3 of TNT's "Major Crimes."
Warner also starred in BET's comedic television series "Reed Between the Lines" as English professor Alex Reed who was married to Carla Reed, a psychologist. The show highlighted the on-screen couple's trials and tribulations as a blended family.
In 2012, the NAACP Image awards nominated Warner for Outstanding Actor in a comedy series for his work in "Reed Between the Lines."
A New Jersey native, Warner was raised by a divorced mother, Pamela, who later served as his acting manager. His mother enrolled him in acting schools after he showed an interest in acting at age nine.
Warner had a relationship with actress Michelle Thomas, who played his girlfriend on "The Cosby Show." He was at her bedside when she died of cancer at age 30 in 1998, reports People magazine. He later was in a relationship with actress Karen Malina White for more than seven years.
