19-Year-Old Marks a New Record as the Youngest Mayor in Maryland
At just 19 years old, Brandon Paulin officially became the youngest mayor in the history of Maryland on Tuesday.
Although the teen is still too young to buy a beer, he was sworn in as mayor in Indian Head in Charles County, Maryland, which boost a population of about 4,000 people.
"He's the youngest mayor I've seen," said Jim Peck, director of research at the Maryland Municipal League, according to The Washington Post. "And I've been here 31 years."
Paulin won a special mayoral election on May 5, beating out the second-place winner by 54 votes, reports WUSA 9. He also won 239 votes, which is more than double the votes that incumbent Mayor Dennis Scheessele received.
Paulin, who is currently studying political science at the College of Southern Maryland, said that he ran for the position in order to make positive changes in the small town.
"I just decided to step up because I think I can implement some solutions to Indian Head's problems," Paulin told WUSA 9.
Originally from Charles County, Paulin says he developed an interest in politics when he began attending meetings around 10 years old.
Frank Willingham, a resident of the town who manages a pizza store, said that he supports his new mayor.
"Some people are like 'A 19-year-old mayor? Really?' but most of the community locals here would stand by him," Willingham said.
He added that Indian Head, which is known as home to a naval base since the late 1800s, needs more business support.
"It's really dictated by the base that's near here. I know that throughout the years, the base has started cutting down on operations," Willingham said.
In response, Paulin says, "What it comes down to is you have to implement vacant building solutions, because some building owners ask astronomical prices for their buildings."
In addition to admitting that he is "nervous" about his new job and running the town, Paulin said he will take online classes so that he can finish his degree and be available to his constituents.
"I'm pretty confident I can keep the balance between being mayor and keeping my grades up," Paulin said.
