The Season 6 finale of "The Vampire Diaries" will be bittersweet as fans will say goodbye to Elena Gilbert and Tyler Lockwood.

Last week's penultimate episode ended after Kai crashed Jo and Alaric's wedding, and he stabbed his pregnant twin sister in the stomach. Plus, while he was destroying the church, Elena was knocked unconscious. Now, it remains to be seen if Elena will live or die.

During an interview with TVLine, executive producer Julie Plec dropped hints about Thursday's finale, which is titled "I'm Thinking of You All the While."

When asked if Jo and her unborn children will survive, Plec responded: "I'm not so sure that's going to have a happy ending, sadly."

The EP also revealed that Liv will play a role in Tyler's exit.

"They start the episode in absolute jeopardy, because Kai has come back to put this coven in their place. So Liv, as a member of the Gemini coven, is definitely one of those people he feels strongly about," she said.

The showrunner also touched upon teasers in the extended promo, which hints that Elena will spend one-on-one time with her loved ones before she says goodbye to Mystic Falls.

"You'll see as many individual goodbyes as you could fit into the episode without it being a clip show," said Plec. "That was one of my and Caroline [Dries'] favorite parts about writing this episode was being able to honor each of those relationships in whatever small ways we could."

Plec said that Thursday night's episode will ultimately pay tribute to the six seasons that Nina Dobrev has played Elena on the show.

"The [struggle was] how we celebrate this and make this feel as final as possible -- because it is final -- but also know we had certain things we were willing, or not willing, to do with that character," Plec tells TVGuide.com.

She added that the ending will give Dobrev's character closure.

"There's a whole sequence, essentially the last two acts of the show, where we found an elegant and graceful and beautiful way to weave the goodbyes for Elena all the way through every character on the show who has loved her through the years. I'm a big sap and I'm obviously biased, but it's incredibly beautiful and very nostalgic and sweet and sad and a really terrific 12 minutes of television," said Plec.

"Everyone else who has watched and loved the show over the years will feel very satisfied and very moved by the way we finish this character's journey," she added.

Plec went on to talk about Season 7, revealing that the next season will take fans on "a really cool, exciting ride. There's hope at the end of the series that we'll be able to give Elena the resolution that Kevin [Williamson] and I have always wanted to give her since Day 1."

Series actor Michael Trevino also hinted that things may not end well for his character, Tyler, in the finale.

"The season finale provides a nice little ending for Tyler," he told TVLine. "Well, it's not nice, but it is emotional. I can't say too much, but we'll see what happens when Kai tries to take out his evil plans on everyone. He doesn't seek revenge on one person; he attacks everybody. He's got some tricks up his sleeve that shatter everyone's worlds. It may be a bit of a tearjerker."

In an interview with E! News, Trevino went further in depth about the emotional finale.

"In the finale, there's a decision that Tyler's going to have to make, and it's probably one of the biggest decisions he's ever made in his life," he said. "It affects other people, and it's a very, very emotional scene and I was very happy they wrote it in there. It's pretty crazy. He'll make this decision that may be fatal for some people or even himself. We pick up in the finale exactly where last week's episode leaves off. This send-off is the way it has to be in order to tie in with everything else."

According to Dread Central, the synopsis reads as follows:

"In the aftermath of Alaric (Matt Davis) and Jo's (guest star Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) powerful nuptials, things take a dramatic turn when an uninvited guest shows up, leaving Elena (Nina Dobrev) in terrible jeopardy.

"Despite Matt's (Zach Roerig) advice to leave town to protect herself, a defiant Bonnie (Kat Graham) takes matters into her own hands after finding herself on the receiving end of a twisted plan.

"As Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) reach an emotional crossroad in their relationship, a reunion with Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) leaves Tyler (Michael Trevino) faced with a decision that could change his life forever.

"Meanwhile, Lily's (guest star Annie Wersching) reckless actions cause Stefan to realize the lengths to which his mother will go to reunite with her "family."

Finally, after a devastating chain of events, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. "

Season 6, Episode 22 of "The Vampire Diaries," entitled "I'm Thinking of You All the While," will air Thursday, May 10 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
