NYC News: Hammer-Wielding Attacker Charged With Assault in Manhattan Attacks
The man who was shot and wounded in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday after allegedly attacking a female NYPD officer with a hammer has been charged with assault.
The NYPD says that 30-year-old David Baril attacked Officer Lauren O'Rourke Wednesday morning with a hammer, striking her three times as she tried to back away from him. Eventually, her partner, Officer Geraldo Casaigne, realized that she was in danger and opened fire, shooting Baril once in the right arm and once in the torso.
According to the New York Post, the police department released video that captured Baril hitting O'Rourke with the weapon around 10 a.m. on Eighth Avenue and West 37th Street.
Following the incident, Baril was taken to the Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was listed in critical condition. He has also been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and seven counts of felony assault, reports The New York Times.
Meanwhile, O'Rourke was treated at Bellevue Hospital for bruises to her back and neck.
In addition to attacking the officer, officials believe Baril was behind a series of hammer attacks in Manhattan that happened to four random women on Monday. Although all of the victims were struck in the head, police say that none suffered from a serious injury.
"Fortunately, thank God, both officers are fine and this individual is not going to be roaming the streets of New York attacking innocents any longer," said Police Commissioner William Bratton, according to The New York Times.
Bratton also applauded both officers for being alert, and Officer Casaigne, 36, for opening fire to detain Baril, who is believed to be a nomad with a history of severe mental illness.
"These officers had no chance to call for assistance -- they acted quickly and instinctively," Bratton said.
"Officer Casaigne quite possibility saved the life of his partner," Bratton continued. "He [Baril] could've easily killed O'Rourke with a blow to the head."
Bratton added that he has met with the officers in person "to thank them for their work and actions."
