Manchester United will make their return to the Champions League next season, and the Red Devils are expected to shore up their roster with key moves this summer.

According to ESPN, Manchester United are expected to make a strong push to acquire Gareth Bale this summer in order to improve their chances of winning trophies next season.

Manchester United, who spent £152 million during the summer transfer window last year, are expected to go on a spending spree once again. Manchester United Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward said that there are no definite plans for the upcoming transfer window, but he admitted that they will be active in finding deals again.

"We expect to be active again during the window, but it is too early to give guidance on transfers or wages at this point," Woodward said in a news conference. "The squad will be absolutely deep enough and ready to challenge on all fronts, all competitions next year. That as ever does involve some ins and outs in the summer."

According to reports, Bale, who was targeted by the club two years ago before the Wales international decided to move to Real Madrid, is still on the radar of the Red Devils. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal wants to sign another midfielder this summer.

Bale is being linked to a move out of Real Madrid after failing to live up to expectations this season. The superstar midfielder has not scored in their last seven games. He was insulted by Real Madrid fans following their 3-2 loss on aggregate to Juventus in their Champions League semifinal match on Wednesday night.

But despite the tumultuous year the former Tottenham star is having, agent Jonathan Barnett said that Bale wants to stay at Bernabeu, but he conceded that they are open to moving to Old Trafford if the Red Devils decide to break the bank for the 25-year-old.

Van Gaal has shown willingness to spend to improve the team since taking over last summer. The Dutchman spent £59.7 million to acquire Angel di Maria from Real Madrid last summer. The veteran coach also recently agreed to a £25 million fee to get Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.
