Oscar Predictions 2016: Weinstein Company Announces Awards Season Slate
The Weinstein Company has started awards season early once again as it showcases its upcoming releases for 2015 at the Cannes Film Festival.
The company held its annual press conference in which it showcased trailers to its upcoming schedule. Among the films slated were "Southpaw" starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Harvey Weinstein commented on Gyllenhaal's Oscar snub for "Nightcrawler" and stated that this year the actor will get nominated. Audiences reacted well to the footage, but the movie comes out in the summer, which does not bode well for Oscar glory.
Meanwhile the company showcased the first trailer to "Carol." The film is premiering in competition and is among the most anticipated. Weinstein noted that he has high hopes for the film. The film has been in conversation for a number of months and has generated Oscar talk. While there is no set release date, the film is likely to open at the end of the year. The film premieres on Sunday, and the Weinstein Company will throw a huge after-party.
The first footage of "Macbeth" was also shown, and based on the footage, audiences were intrigued. Weinstein noted that Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard gave two of the best performances of the year, and director Justin Kurzel gave the film visual splendor. The movie opens in competition at the end of the festival and has also made headlines for a number of months. While it is a Shakespeare adaptation, pundits expect the movie could be a huge Oscar contender.
While these three films engaged audiences, it was "The Hateful Eight" that excited most. The first footage to Quentin Tarantino showcased the images of Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Kurt Russell and Channing Tatum. Weinstein said that film would skip the festival circuit as it would be ready on time. The Weinstein Company has collaborated with Tarantino for years, and three of his films have went on to get nominated for the Oscars. Among those films were "Pulp Fiction," "Inglourious Basterds" and "Django Unchained."
Other highlights included "Lion" with Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman and "Adam Jones" with Sienna Miller and Bradley Cooper. The company also showcased footage from "Tulip Fever" with Alicia Vikander as well as "The Little Prince," which premieres this week. Interestingly enough the company did not announce any plans to release "Suite Francaise." That movie recently opened in the U.K. and scored good reviews.
The Weinstein Company's presentation usually begins awards conversation and this presentation will definitely bring up a lot of questions. This year the company has a lot of films and seems like they will overcrowd their Oscar slate. "Carol" and "The Hateful Eight" seem like the best chances for Best Picture. However, very little is known for "Adam Jones," "Lion" or even "Tulip Fever." As for "Macbeth," the Academy has not been friendly to Shakespeare films in years, and this one does not seem like it will be an exception unless the film is universally praised. "Southpaw" is also unlikely to get nominated unless it is a box office hit and it is embraced by critics. Additionally, with Gyllenhaal in two films, the actor could be in competition with himself.
The Weinstein Company has been one of the biggest Oscar players since its inception in 2005. Recently the company had "The Imitation Game," "Philomena," "The Reader," "Inglourious Basterds," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Django Unchained" all nominated for Best Picture. They also had two Best picture winners in a row, including "The King's Speech" and "The Artist."
It may be too early to tell which film ends up as the company's biggest bid, but expect the company to be among the Best Picture nominees.
