Johnny Manziel NFL: Will Star Head To The Pros In 2014?
Johnny Football refused to suffer a deflating loss to the Duke Blue Devils in the last game of his career. Manziel led his team, the Texas A&M Aggies, to one of the greatest comebacks of the 2013 college football season. Down 38-17 at halftime in the Chick-fil-A bowl at the Georgia Dome, it looked like Duke would easily secure its first 11 win season in program history. Yet, Manziel refused to quit and gutted out a victory with the flash and magic that he has been known for since he arrived at College Station, home of the Aggies.
Manziel's final stat line: 455 total yards, five touchdowns, and one hurdle. It was likely Manziel's last game as an amateur. He may very well be the top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
NFL.com reporter Gil Brandt tweeted out on Monday a really obvious message stating that Manziel and his favorite downfield target 6' 5" wide out Mike Evans were not long for College Station.
"No surprise but Manziel and Evans will be playing final college games tomorrow, multiple sources tell me."
Manziel also is no ordinary player. At 6' 1" he doesn't have the height a proto-typical NFL Quarterback height, but he has a wide-body capable of being filled out to around 220 pounds. That extra weight will help him absorb the punishment of a 16 game NFL season. Manziel was the first freshman to ever win the Heisman trophy last year (since matched by Florida State's Jameis Winston) due in large part to his amazing quickness and unparalleled improvisational abilities.
CBS' Bruce Feldman posted this nugget of information on Twitter.
"Johnny Manziel on his message to his teammates when way down: 'Don't quit. Don't even look at the scoreboard'."
Manziel's great leadership and poise in the Chick-fil-A bowl showed that he is worthy of being called a Heisman trophy winner. He repeatedly got in his teammates' faces including Evans, who played uncharacteristically lackadaisical for much of the night, and celebrated every touchdown he threw or ran for like it was his last day on earth.
He may party hard in the offseason, but there is no questioning Johnny Football's leadership and love of the game. But if initiating the biggest rally in school history doesn't change your mind, nothing will. Not even a potential NFL championship.
