Netflix News: Sci-Fi Thrillers ‘Sense8’ and ‘Advantageous’ Coming Soon
Netflix has been a roll lately with creating new, engaging episodic series that have piqued the interest of subscribers and critics alike.
Its most recent release of "Daredevil" has been met with critical appraise and is currently one of the streaming service's most popular shows streaming on the video-buffet platform.
According to TVLine, there are some more spectacular shows coming to the streaming service, two of which are sci-fi/supernatural thrillers.
"Sense8" features well-known actors Naveen Andrews ("Lost") and Daryl Hannah ("Kill Bill") who are part of a group of eight people around the world that have the ability to feel, hear and think other people's thoughts and emotions. They can even tap into each other's skills, which leads to quite a bit of fighting and action scenes. They are called "sensates," and the show will premier on Netflix on June 5.
They start their coexistence after an extreme event puts them in touch with their abilities. TVLine got some of the details from Hannah about the show.
"[It's] the most diverse group of eight people you could probably find, who, through this extreme event, suddenly begin to realize they are interconnected through their senses," Hannah told TV Line. "There's also dark forces that are at work to try and stop them. They somehow hold the key to saving humanity."
Also coming to Netflix is the indie sci-fi film that screened at Sundance this year, "Advantageous," according to The Verve.
The film is set in 2041 and features a mostly Asian cast. It is the brainchild of writer-director Jennifer Phang and will be streamed on Netflix starting June 23.
"I'm looking forward to seeing how Netflix viewers around the world will respond to the world we created," Phang said in a statement. "We're finding those who saw it at Sundance and other festivals have been discussing the film long after watching."
The film won the "Special Jury Prize for Collaborative Vision" at the Sundance Film Festival this year and has been described as an "emotionally satisfying sci-fi film" by The Verve's Emily Yoshida.
