Iker Casillas Transfer to Arsenal 2015: Keeper to Stay With Real Madrid During 2015-16
The drama is slated to continue at the Santiago Bernabeu next season as Real Madrid and Iker Casillas have apparently agreed to keep the captain around next year.
Many expected Casillas to get his marching orders this summer after a season filled with as many lows as highs.
That, however, no longer looks to be the case.
What makes this decision all the more intriguing is that it will create some interesting goaltending scenarios moving forward.
Everyone knows that Madrid covets David De Gea and all indications point toward him joining the team. That places Keylor Navas' career in a tough situation.
The Costa Rican goalkeeper was a standout at the 2014 World Cup and was quickly purchased by Real Madrid, creating a three-headed monster that included Casillas, Navas and Diego Lopez. Lopez was forced out to AC Milan and Casillas, who was a backup during the 2013-14 season, was propelled to the starter's spot.
Navas wound up riding the pine for the entirety of 2014-15, never really getting a chance to prove his value.
With De Gea joining and Casillas staying, another three-headed monster is bound to materialize with Navas likely looking for another place to take his talents. The 28-year-old is still in his peak years and should not have any trouble getting a better gig on another club.
This likely leaves a battle between Casillas and De Gea for the top spot. Carlo Ancelotti is bound to get fired by most reporters, meaning that the next manager will face a tough decision. If Casillas and Madrid came to an agreement to keep him, then it means that he has the club's backing. If this is the case, then the new manager might be forced to reinstate Casillas as the number one. Of course, if the team is splurging money on De Gea, then it could be a situation in which Casillas has agreed to be the backup and make way for the younger Spaniard.
Is Keylor Navas' Real Madrid career over?
