Sony has made the much awaited reveal, and it turns out that the PS4 has indeed outsold Microsoft's Xbox One by 1.2 million units.

In a Twitter update Tuesday, Sony has announced through @PlayStation:

"4.2 million PS4s sold. Four. Point. Two. Million. #CES2014 "

The update came with a photo of the game console plus Sony's knack for emphasis. Four. Point. Two. Million.

Rival Microsoft has made its announcement regarding Xbox One sales hours back. The Xbox One has officially sold 3 million units since launch day in over 13 countries.

PS4's 4.2 million units sale count includes sales from launch day up until the end of 2013. Sony has made the game console available to North America on November 15, while rival Microsoft stocked Xbox One consoles on shelves November 22 in 13 countries including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand.

The PlayStation 4 didn't hit Europe and Australia until November 29.

Leading by a week in terms of launch date, Sony's PS4 is rumored to have had an edge over Microsoft's Xbox One - reaching markets earlier and in time for the holiday season.

Some are also saying that the PS4's price, a good $100 lower than Xbox One's has also been a good determining factor for purchase. The PS4 costs $399.99 while the Xbox One is priced at $499.99.

Both consoles have proven to be high in demand in physical and online stores. PS4, specifically has once been deemed out of stock by Best Buy, although the big store has restocked on the game console. Best Buy's inventory of the Xbox One was fairly okay by the time the store has ran out of Sony's game console.

Online, the PS4 is currently listed as 'Sold Out' at Best Buy. The Xbox One, however, is still available for purchase.
