In "Aquarius" Episode 3 "Never Say Never to Always," Sam Hodiak breaks into his ex-wife's house in an attempt to figure out where his missing son Walt is. He doesn't find his son, but he does find Ed Cutler, his long-time partner on the police force, who is apparently having an affair with Opal Hodiak.

Sam tells Ed that he is done with him. "

I don't work with liars. It's not a moral thing -- it's a safety issue," he says.

Later, Sam and Ed clash on the job when a call comes in that diner owner and drug dealer Art Gladner has been killed. Brian Shafe is working undercover as one of Art's clients and can't help, so Sam and Ed go to investigate.

Witnesses saw Brian's snitch, Mike, running from the scene. Ed has him in the back seat of a patrol car, but Sam doesn't think Mike killed Art. The killer was right handed and taller. Mike is left handed and too short. Ed disagrees.

Meanwhile, Brian continues his investigation into Charlie Manson. He tries to reconcile with Charlie's friend Roy Kovic after tripping him down a flight of stairs last episode. Brian tells Roy that someone has been posing as a member of his biker gang. He needs Roy to introduce Charmaine Tully, an undercover female police officer, to Charlie.

Charlie is cautious when he meets Charmaine. He doesn't recognize her, though she claims they met previously. She tells him a lie that they spent a night together in a canyon, followed by a convincing wolf howl. Charlie joins in howling, as does everyone in the room. She's in.

Charmaine has sex with Roy as payment for introducing her to Charlie. Charlie has sex with Emma Karn's dad, Ken Karn. Charlie and Ken have a history -- Ken used to be Charlie's lawyer.

When Emma asks why her father was at the compound, Charlie says, "He asked me how much I wanted for you, like you were a used car." Charlie's lie is to gain her loyalty to use as he pleases.

Brian reports to Sam that he saw Emma at the compound. Sam takes Emma's mother, Grace Karn, to the compound. Sam confronts Roy with Emma's photo while Grace asks a girl if her parents know where she is. The girl says "yes." Sam and Grace do not find Emma; they leave to commiserate about their missing children and end up having sex.

Opal arrives at the precinct with a letter from their son, but it doesn't help Sam find him. Opal says she used her diabetes to get Walt out of the Vietnam War, but she doesn't know where he is.

When Charlie learns Sam and Grace visited the compound, he fears they may return so he gives Emma and Sadie to Rue Fisher, a sound engineer working on his demo. He tells Rue to enjoy the girls as long as he wants.
