“The Mindy Project,” the Mindy Kaling-starring comedy that follows the hilarious hijinks of Mindy Lahiri – a young OB/GYN seeking to forge a balance between her work and her love life while making it in New York – draws its intense fan base with stories that ring true to contemporary working women everywhere.

Now approaching its fourth season, the show, which has just moved from Fox to the streaming service Hulu, will be bringing in a new female cast member in an effort to supply the main character with a much needed buddy.

According to Kaling the integration of a female friend mirrors how tough it is to make pals in the real world.

"It's hard to make friends as an adult woman. … In L.A., the only people you meet are women in your spin class," Kaling said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "And you have to wonder, if a woman seeks you out at spin class, you wonder what the motivations are! But you're so desperate for friends. … It's much harder to find someone you want to talk to than a man you want to sleep with."

For Kaling, the 35-year-old writer and comedienne who first came to the attention of the public playing the sassy and superficial Kelly Kapoor on NBC's hit sitcom “The Office,” it is perhaps easier to make fans than friends.

In her upcoming book, the actress states that the only thing she really wants to do in the next five years is make a good friend.

Aside from the introduction of a new cast member, there are sure to be lots of exciting changes coming to the series now that the show will be freed from its network confines.

"I am thrilled 'The Mindy Project' has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show," Kaling said, according to Us Magazine. "It's such an exciting place to be."
