Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been in negotiations with 20th Century Fox to play the role of Jack Burton in the remake of the John Carpenter film "Big Trouble in Little China," as reported by The Wrap.

The original 1986 film starred Kurt Russell in the lead role opposite a young Kim Cattrall ("Sex and the City"). The film only grossed about $11 million at the box office, which was a modest sum back in the '80s. But it soon got a cult following, and the movie also drew big audiences to its cable airings over the years.

The screenplay will be written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who both recently wrote the screenplay for the Marvel hit "X-Men: First Class." That film went on to do great numbers at the box office, and 20th Century Fox are excited about bringing them onboard with high anticipations for their take on the John Carpenter classic.

Johnson, who was a big fan of the original film, took up with his production partners – Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia – at Seven Bucks Productions, and pitched the remake idea to Fox, who released the first film and still owned the rights to the franchise.

With his recent hit release, "San Andreas," Johnson is poised to be the current big draw for action entertainment films today. His presence in the last three "Fast and Furious" films has also helped them pass box-office milestones, with the most recent film "Furious 7" already passing $1 billion worldwide.

His current projects includes the HBO show "Ballers" and the Warner Bros. comic book film "Shazam."

An article on The Verge really hypes this upcoming production with a lot of potential, considering Johnson has become the likable hero in modern action films. But there is also the potential for disaster, considering so many recent remakes of 1980s films, such as "Robocop" and "Poltergeist," have not been met with good responses.
