‘The Boondock Saints’ to Be Made Into a Prequel TV Series [Watch]
"The Boondock Saints" started as a cult-classic film in 1999 and it is now getting a new platform.
The movie, which originally featured "The Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery as the Irish immigrant MacManus brothers, will be getting a prequel TV show, according to Deadline.
Now that IM Global Television has acquired the rights to the film franchise, there is a new series in development, which will bring back the film's original writer/director Troy Duffy in what could potentially be an explosive new TV series.
There is no word yet where the series might land, but speculation is abound with Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, Showtime or Starz coming up as possibilities. The gritty and graphic nature of the first two films would seem to be a little too much for a broadcast network's censor department.
The first film, which had a limited theatrical release then straight to video release that was so popular that it later got another theatrical run, also spawned a sequel in 2009 featuring the same gritty theme of two vigilante brothers out for extreme justice on the mafia underworld thugs.
They portrayed a sort of mobster's "boogeyman" kind of persona, where much of their activities were considered rumored or legend, until of course they showed up at the front door of underground thugs with bullets blazing through the air and thick, Irish-accented warrior prayers floating around the room.
The original stars Reedus and Flanery are expected to sign on as producers for the series. Duffy has already written the first episode and a "bible" for the series, which will probably be a set of guidelines for the show to closely adhere to.
The series is expected to be a prequel story for the films, which will likely follow their father from the first two films and we may even see an appearance from Willem Dafoe, whose character did a 180 in the first film switching sides from wise-cracking F.B.I. agent to vigilante accomplice in the end. He also made an appearance at the end of the sequel film, hinting at the possibility that a third film would be forthcoming.
"For years I've been obsessed with telling a real origin story with 'Boondock,' and IM Global TV has stepped up," Duffy told Deadline. "Television is the perfect medium to explore these controversial characters on a much deeper level and to bring 'Boondock Saints' to a whole new audience."
