eBay App: E-Commerce Website Brings Services to Apple Watch, Updates Smartphone App
Starting Tuesday, eBay shoppers will have a whole new way to bid on items and monitor items they have for sale. The eBay app is coming to Apple Watch and it will allow eBay users to keep track of their auctions and watch lists, CNet reports.
The new Apple Watch app will allow eBay to push notifications to the user's Apple Watch. This can help them keep tabs on items they are bidding on while on the go.
According to Engadget, the app could help eBay users win a last second auction they normally would have been outbid on if they were not able to get to their phone or computer.
This is not the first time eBay has offered a smartwatch app. Two years ago, there were apps offered for the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Pebble Watch. However, Apple Watch is expected to be the leader in smartwatches for the foreseeable future. eBay realized the potential number of customers it could retain by adding functionality to the Apple Watch.
Amazon, one of eBay's major competitors gave support to the Apple Watch early, back in April when the device first was released to the public.
"Our goal is to make it relevant to users and not obnoxious," John Tapley, eBay's senior product manager for mobile and wearables, said. "We're just at the start of it, so we'll continue to evolve the feature set over time."
As more customers are using smartphones and smartwatches to perform more functions, eBay hopes that an Apple Watch app is a good way to capture these customers. The company said that more than 50 percent of its users log-on to eBay from its mobile app.
Joining eBay with an Apple Watch app is Target, Amazon and Fandango. Target came out with an Apple Watch app that puts a shopping list on the customer's Apple Watch display. Amazon created an Apple Watch app that lets customers search and buy items offered on its website. Fandango lets customers use their watch as a movie ticket.
On Tuesday, eBay also announced that it has made updates to its iPhone and Android apps. The updates will improve the search function. Customers will be matched with better results when searching for an item like a smartphone. Instead of chargers and accessories, customers will first be matched with actual phones with the new improved search capabilities.
