It's been almost two decades since the Will Smith-starrer "Independence Day" came out on the big screen and Fox has confirmed that a sequel is already in the works for the planetary apocalypse film. Not too many details have been released for the highly anticipated second movie but rumors have come out that "Independence Day 2" would be centered on the possible extinction of planet Earth.

The original film that came out in 1996 talked about an alien species that attack other planets to harvest its natural resources. However, the sequel is said to bring a different kind of extraterrestrial life form with a different agenda for planet Earth.

The synopsis of the upcoming movie, which was revealed on Collider, hinted of a catastrophic alien invasion.

"Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet," wrote the synopsis. "But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

While the brief description is already frightening enough, a poster displayed at the Licensing Expo event in Las Vegas offered a more vivid look at what planet Earth will be facing next in the film.

The poster showed a huge alien spaceship, perhaps bigger than the size of the planet, emitting what seemed to be a huge beam of light and energy towards the Earth. The beam covers the side of the planet directly facing the ship, suggesting total destruction.

Collider was quick to clarify that the poster on display at the event was not an official one nor was it from Fox. It was a promotional material that was just made for the sole use of the Licensing Expo.

However, the site noted that given the description in the synopsis, it could be the same direction the movie's marketing team would head to.

Actors Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Vivica A. Fox will reprise their roles in the sequel. Will Smith, on the other hand, will be missing in action.

Director Roland Emmerich confirmed that the actor will not join his cast.

"Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," said the director to New York Daily News. "It would be too much."

Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and Judd Hirsch are also part of the cast.

"Independence Day 2" will hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
