The biggest soccer tournament in South American history is just hours away. You can just feel the dramatic excitement building up every second. An event filled with diving saves, headers, and amazing ankle breaking moves is upon us. A total of 12 teams will compete to be named the best.
Brief History
The Copa America dates back to 1916 when it was known as the "South American Championship." Uruguay has won this competition the most times (15), with Argentina winning it 14 times. Brazil has won eight Copa America titles. Uruguay won the last Copa America in 2011, defeating Paraguay in the finals. The last host team to win was Colombia in 2001.
Groupings and Rankings
Group A
Chile (19)
Mexico (23)
Ecuador (31)
Bolivia (89)
Prediction: Ecuador might give Chile a bit of fight, but this group is still Chile's to lose. Chile has arguably the best goalkeeper in the tournament this year in Claudio Bravo, and Mexico isn't at full strength preparing for the Gold Cup. Chile is also the host nation, for the first time since 1991. Don't expect a huge surprise here. Chile should take care of business and advance.
Prediction: This should definitely be the most entertaining group for soccer fans. Brazil and Colombia highlight this group with young superstars like Barcelona's Neymar and Real Madrid's James Rodriguez. Colombia is an up-and-coming team, but Brazil will win Group C thanks to their balanced squad. However, both Colombia and Brazil will advance to the quarter-finals. We may see Brazil and Colombia face off again in the knockout stage.
Schedule, Where to Watch
This year's Copa America begins on Thursday, June 11 with Chile and Ecuador squaring off at 7:30 p.m. EST on the beIN sports network. Chile is the host nation this year, and it has provided teams with nine different venues to play in. The final game will be played on July 4 in the capital city of Santiago.
Final Prediction
The four best teams in this Copa America are Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina. This has been of the greatest years in soccer history, and Messi wants to end it on a good note. Argentina captures their 15th Copa America championship, and first since 1993.
