‘Bad Boys 3’ News: Film Moving Forward With New Director, Possibly Same Stars
What started as a Michael Bay directorial hit in 1995 starring Will Smith ("Suicide Squad") and Martin Lawrence, is now about to get its third installment, according to Deadline.
This follows Sony Pictures' current moves to strengthen and expand on its franchises moving forward in the golden age of sequels and reboots. Although the current trend of adapting film franchises into TV series has been ramping up, this "Bad Boys" sequel is expected to stay on the big-screen.
David Guggenheim, who wrote the screenplay for "Safe House," has written a "strong" draft of the film sequel that has drawn the attention and interest of Joe Carnahan, who is in early talks about directing the film.
Smith is currently in development for "Suicide Squad," and the intention here could be to cash in on his star power while he has once again became a hot commodity in the industry. The actor has recently been slow to release many new films, but his reemergence has ignited the old power of the action franchise.
Carnahan's most recent director credit was with "The Grey," and he is sure to have that combustible style necessary to fuel a "Bad Boys" adaptation, which matches other action films of the day like "Furious 7" and "The Equalizer."
The first sequel to the franchise came in 2003, eight years after the original release. This third installment will come after a 12-year hiatus from the franchise, but likely won't be released until sometime next summer, giving it a 13-year gap.
Cinema Blend also reports that after many years of talks for this sequel, Sony apparently wants to put this upcoming installment on the fast track due in part to their need for a hit, but they also want it ready to go when Smith wraps production on "Suicide Squad."
