Octomom Faces Felony Welfare Fraud Charges: What Will Happen to Her Kids?
Infamous Nadya Suleman, also known as "Octomom" was charged Monday, January 6, with felony welfare fraud.
LA Times reported that prosecutors claim the 38-year old mother of 14 could face five years in jail for allegedly failing to disclose nearly $38,000 in earnings upon applying for welfare last year.
The LA County District Attorney's Office narrated that Suleman filed for welfare in Lancaster in January and February of last year but failed to report her income coming from personal appearances and video royalties, said District Atty. William Clark.
Although it wasn't disclosed by authorities which personal appearances or videos involved, it's public knowledge that Suleman has made at least one porn video, posed topless for various publications, danced in a Florida strip club and taken part in so-called celebrity boxing matches as she's struggled to support her children, ABC recounts.
Prosecutors have charged the Octomom with one count of aid by misrepresentation and two counts of perjury by false application for aid. Maximum sentence of the charges is five years, eight months in custody.
USA Today has not been able to reach Suleman's camp for a comment but Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the prosecutor, indicated that their office is unaware if she has a lawyer or will be requesting one to be named for her during her court appearance.
The felony complaint accuses Suleman of receiving a total of $16,481 illegally pocked aid which includes $9,814 in CalFresh aid, the food aid program known elsewhere as the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), without disclosing her income. She is also accused of receiving $6,667 in aid she was not entitled to from CalWORKS, the welfare program that provides cash aid and services to eligible needy California families.
The arraignment is scheduled for Friday and prosecutors expect bail to be set at $ 25,000.
Octomom gained worldwide attention and criticism back in 2009 when Suleman, a single mother, used in vitro fertilization to get pregnant. She became pregnant with eight kids and was on public assistance during that time.
