‘Jurassic World’ Set New Global Box Office Record With $511 Million
In what was poised to be an outstanding weekend box-office haul for the latest installment to the "Jurassic" franchise, "Jurassic World" didn't just perform up to the highest of standards, it broke the global box-office record for an opening weekend debut, according to Variety.
For the first time in history, this movie has opened to a global weekend box-office haul of $511 million, $204 million of which came out of the domestic box-office. That also means it opened to the number one spot in 66 international territories as well.
"Dinosaurs are fascinating to everyone," Nick Carpou, president of domestic distribution at Universal, told Variety. "It's cross-cultural."
Even though the $204 million domestic number was very impressive and far exceeded industry professionals expectations, it is still only the second highest opener in the U.S. alone. That record goes to the 2012 Marvel hit film "The Avengers," which opened to $207 million. It's sequel came close as well, opening to $191 million in the U.S. and now holds the number 3 spot, according to Box Office Mojo.
These unprecedented opening weekend numbers did not quite start at this level until the opening weekend of "The Dark Knight" in 2008, which opened to $158 million and broke all box-office records at the time, including unseating reigning champion "Spiderman 3" which had a $151 million opening.
But "Jurassic World" did shatter the global record with its impressive haul, which will not likely be broken anytime soon.
This news also puts Universal into the limelight with another record, according to Deadline.
This marks the quickest a major movie studio has ever reached $1 billion domestically and $3 billion globally. This includes their previous releases for the summer as well. That list consists of "Jurassic World," "Pitch Perfect 2," "Furious 7" and "Fifty Shades of Grey."
This record number is bound to keep growing over the summer as well, given this is only the first weekend for "Jurassic World." By comparison, "The Avengers" in 2012 brought in $103 million in its second weekend. The studio also has "Minions," "Ted 2," "Trainwreck" and "Straight Outta Compton" coming out this summer in what could be the biggest year in history for Universal.
