“Ray Donovan,” the Liev Schreiber-starring crime drama, comes back to Showtime for Season 3 on July 12.

And, as noted in the Hollywood Reporter, the coming season will have its fair share of guest stars, including "Deadwood’s" Ian McShane, Katie Holmes and Sarah Shahi, who will be reuniting with her former “L Word” love interest Katherine Moennig.

Shahi, the 35-year-old “Person of Interest” star, will be playing a character named Hasmig. The character is an Armenian pop star. Shahi is set to appear in one episode, and she will play opposite Moennig, who plays Lena, Donovan’s (Schreiber) assistant.

"Ray Donovan" is a show that has drawn particular praise as well as some ire for its portrayal of morally questionable solutions to all manner of crime-related problems.

As quoted in Out TV, Moennig explains that she believes every human being has a conscience, and that there is always an underlying reason why people are violent or make extreme choices. Describing her character’s actions, she says it is just part of her job to think on her feet and make choices "that aren’t exactly likable.”

“But I feel like every character on this show, regardless of what their actions may be, there is something, there is some sadness there,” she says. “There is humanity with all of these characters, with her included.”

As for Liev Schreiber, the 47-year-old actor who plays the intense “fixer” on the series,
a lot of the fighting and violence that comes across on screen comes from a place of fear and anxiety.

In an interview in Esquire, Schreiber says “the moments we associate with classic noir masculinity – the deep penetrating gaze and the pain behind the eyes – they’re all about expressing emotional trauma.”

“So there’s an irony there – iconic masculinity is really about men revealing their feminine traits, their sensitivity,” says the actor.
