“Grey’s Anatomy” season 12 will officially feature a new doctor who could take over McDreamy’s place.

TV Line confirmed that Martin Henderson has joined the cast of the long-running TV drama. He used to be the lead star in another medical drama by Shonda Rhimes, “Off the Map,” which did not stay on TV for long.

Although it remains unclear whether the New Zealand native’s character will also be a neurosurgeon, he will be portraying someone who is a new series regular on the hit medical show, a rep from ABC told TV Line.

That said, fans of the ABC medical series were quick to speculate that there is a big possibility Henderson might reprise his “Off the Map” role as Dr. Ben Keeton.

Patrick Dempsey, who was famous as Dr. Derek Shepherd, had a sudden exit from the show, which broke the hearts of fans. Dempsey’s character was killed off, ending his 11-year tenure in the highly watched show.

“It has been a remarkable ride,” Dempsey told TV Line shortly after his last episode aired on TV. “The worldwide impact has been extraordinary. It is incredible how devoted and passionate the fans are. I will forever be grateful and humbled by the experience.”

Apparently, as indicated in the statement that ABC released to address Dempsey’s personal decision to leave the show, the famous racer/actor wanted to move on to “pursue other interests.” “McDreamy will be greatly missed,” the statement read. “We wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.”

Following Dempsey’s exit, Rhimes’ search for a new doctor with a “charismatic” male blood was no secret. Still, Rhimes was well aware that Dempsey had turned Derek Shepherd into an incredibly significant “Grey’s Anatomy” character. His performance as the famed neurosurgeon with amazingly beautiful hair had turned Derek into someone “young women should demand from modern love.”

She confirmed in April that the whole cast and crew of “Grey’s Anatomy” will be embarking on an “uncharted territory” as everyone heads into a new post-Derek era, especially the now-widowed Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo. “The possibilities for what may come are endless,” Rhimes shared. “As Ellis Grey would say, the carousel never stops turning.”

As a new official part of the show, Henderson is expected to enter the “Grey’s Anatomy” season 12 storyline on September 24, Thursday.
