‘Emerald City’ Plot & Cast: ‘Wizard of Oz’ Re-Imagining Gets ‘True Detective’ Actress Adria Arjona for Dorothy
“Emerald City,” a re-imagining event series of the classic “Wizard of Oz” storyline, has officially cast its actress who will portray the lead role of Dorothy.
According to TV Line, Adria Arjona, who played the role of Emily in the hit HBO thriller “True Detective," has been selected as the main protagonist of the show.
As stated in the report, “Emerald City” will only have 10 episodes – each of which will tell a re-imagined story of the events that transpired when Dorothy arrived at Oz through a natural calamity. Adding a more modernized touch to the plot, a 20-year-old Dorothy arrives with her K9 police dog by way of a tornado.
Although the storyline of “Wizard of Oz” is never lost and continues to be one of the classic stories that is being told and retold today, “Emerald City” will feature the lead female character in a way that Frank Baum’s readers have never seen before.
As soon as they arrive in Oz, Dorothy immediately realizes that she is in another world – one that had dark magic, barbaric warriors, as well as different kingdoms that kept battling each other for supremacy over the mystical land.
It turns out that the NBC show was actually supposed to air last August. However, its concept was reportedly scrapped when there were some "creative differences" between writer and executive producer Josh Friedman of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and the network.
Thankfully, it was confirmed in April that a new director was called in to take the directorial spot that Friedman vacated. Taking Friedman’s place is David Schulner of “The Event.” Shaun Cassidy of “American Gothic” will be right by his side as the upcoming NBC show’s executive producer.
To date, it remains unclear how Schulner will give “Emerald City” its unique twist. However, a report from Deadline stated that the show will feature classic plotlines from “Wizard of Oz,” but with a darker tone, similar to “Game of Thrones.”
