American Apparel Shocks Pedestrians; Stirs Controversy With Mannequins
It seems like American Apparel has taken the growing trend to make mannequins seem more realistic way too far. The clothing manufacturer recently stirred controversy as it put the mannequins with full pubic hair on display, stopping numerous pedestrians on the street.
This is not the first time American Apparel has pushed the limit. In fact, the company is notorious for its shocking and eye-catching ad campaigns and designs. Its previous stunts include the real-life model in transparent underwear showing everything off to the public, and last year, AA released a T-shirt designed by an artist, featuring a graphic line drawing of a menstruating hairy vagina.
The real-looking mannequins reportedly went up on the store's front window at 3 a.m. on Thursday. The latest Instagram snapshot from American Apparel in New York City shows its female mannequins spilling out literally everything, including their bushy pubic hair and nipples completely exposed.
One thing for sure is that the bushy mannequins are not there just to display clothes. One of the employees at the store admitted that there is a message behind the new mannequins. "We were meant to convey the 'rawness and realness of sexuality,'" he said.
The new movement certainly had New Yorkers stopping in the store's tracks to look at the not-so-ordinary sight, and take photos of the shop window. American Apparel has been inundated with press calls, as well.
Although it technically is a natural thing, it is still considered as a shocking factor. American Apparel's mannequins with bushy pubic hair confront the female taboo of whether or not, and how much to shave the private area.
