Swarm App: Classic Foursquare Users will get Their Mayorships Back
Users of Swarm and Foursquare might remember competing against strangers for mayorships. When Foursquare split into two apps last summer, mayorships were removed.
Now, the feature is coming back, Tech Crunch reported.
Foursquare added Swarm as its check-in program last August. Foursquare became a tool similar to Yelp, where users could discover new places, get recommendations and rate places. Swarm was solely used for checking into places.
Swarm got rid of mayorships when the app was released. Mayorships were given to Foursquare members for being loyal to a place by checking in frequently. Swarm instead awarded stickers for certain behaviors and allowed users to compete against their friends only for the stickers.
Earlier this summer, Swarm promised that users could again start competing against strangers for mayor titles. Mayorships are awarded based on a 30-day basis with only one check-in allowed per day.
Swarm has already been calculating users' check-ins for the last few weeks. This means users could already be mayor of certain places they have recently been to.
With the recent update of Swarm, the Sticker Book has also been updated. When users open the Sticker Book, they will see a separate tab that keeps track of the places they are already mayor of.
The Sticker Book will also include a progress bar that will tell users how far away they are from becoming mayor of a location.
Mayorships were a big part of the old Foursquare. They allowed users to compete against the entire Foursquare network to prove their loyalty of a location they liked to visit.
Swarm has decided to make the app more of a game with a new sticker book and bringing back mayors. Stickers are awarded when users check-in to a certain types of places like pizza restaurants or airports.
The Verge reports that mayorships on Swarm will appear on the update of the Swarm app which is already available for both iOS and Android.
