HBO's highly anticipated second season of "True Detective" kicked off Sunday night with the season premiere, titled "The Western Book of the Dead."

Fans were introduced to a new case that takes place in the scorched landscape of California involving three interesting, dark characters: Detective Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell), Detective Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) and Highway Patrolman Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch).

The three converged to investigate the grisly murder of city planner Ben Caspere in Los Angeles.

It was revealed that crime boss Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) has a stake in the investigation of Ben's death because he trusted the dead man with a huge sum of money for a high speed rail development project. Frank and fans both want to know what happened to the money.

Also in the first episode, Ani and her team of officers raided a cyber-cam porn business, where her sister worked, believing it was a prostitution ring.

In Episode 2, "Night Finds You," the autopsy of the city planner reveals unusual details about the murder to Ray and Ani. The two detectives have reason to believe that Ben's death has something to do with his fondness for prostitutes.

The promotional video reveals that Frank may not have the patience to wait for law enforcement to solve the crime. His high speed rail project is in jeopardy. His money is missing. Frank, who has been trying to go legitimate in his business dealings, wants Ray to help find his money. Ray has worked for the mafia man before and is indebted to him. It's a demand that he cannot refuse.

The conflict of interest undoubtedly will create problems between Ray and his law enforcement collaborators. In the teaser, Ani asks Ray, "How compromised are you?"

What will Ray, Ani and Paul uncover about Ben's murder in Episode 2? Find out by watching "True Detective" Episode 2 "Night Finds You" on Sunday, June 28, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
