‘Jurassic World’ Sets New Records Daily, Becomes Quickest Movie to Gross $1B
"Jurassic World" features the biggest movie monsters in history and also has T-Rex-sized box office numbers to go with it, according to an article on Box Office Mojo.
The start of this epic theatrical run came on June 12, where the movie garnered a weekend total haul of more than $208 million just in the U.S. That new record beats the previous record set by Marvel's "The Avengers," which opened in 2012 to $207 million. Most people in the industry considered that an unbeatable record, but that was three years ago and times have changed, considering the only movie that had ever come close to it at the time was "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2" at $169 million.
But now, "Jurassic World" continues to set new records daily with box-office hauls. "Jurassic World" also has the record for three-day grosses and up until 10-day grosses. Last weekend, it also set the record for second weekend total gross by adding another $106 million to the total haul. Of course the previous record holder for that was once again "The Avengers" with $103 million.
But with all of these domestic gross records, we have still not even began to touch upon the international numbers. As of this posting, "Jurassic World" has grossed $402 million in the U.S. and $584 million total in other countries. That puts its worldwide haul at $987.2 million as of yesterday. That was just in its first ten days. Passing the $1 billion mark today, which it inevitably has already done at the time of this posting, makes it the fastest movie to reach that number and joins a short list of movies that have ever reached the exclusive club.
By comparison, "The Dark Knight" made $1.004 billion during its entire theatrical run, which ran for 231 days.
The highest grossing movie of all time is the 2009 film "Avatar," which raked in $760 million in the U.S. and more than $2.7 billion worldwide. It ran for 234 days and even had an extra release later the next year, which added an extra $10 million to its domestic total.
It would be a fair assumption to say that "Jurassic World" may be in line to catch up with the current record holder, but all the hype for the film may fade away over time. Right now though, the film has enough momentum to keep it going strong past the coveted $600 million mark domestically.
