It has been nearly 20 years since audiences have seen or heard from the stars and aliens of "Independence Day," but all that is about to change, according to Variety.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" is making its way to cinemas soon, and there are a lot of fan theories as to how the sequel will be handled. So far, there are not too many details from producers.

The first film starred Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum alongside Bill Pullman, who played the President. The plot revolved around an alien attack on the planet.

In the beginning, there seemed to be no way to defend themselves against the aliens. But that all changed with a computer virus the people of Earth implanted within the alien defenses. That took the aliens shields down and the human race opened were able to defeat them.

Goldblum, Vivica Fox, Pullman and Judd Hirsch will be returning to the film franchise. They will be joined by Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the sequel.

The film is about the nations of Earth uniting to build a stronger defense against alien encounters. But this time, nearly 20 years later, the aliens have returned with a stronger and more advanced force. This unprecedented attack will lead to another cataclysmic climax, but fans will have to wait until next summer to see how it plays out.

Dean Devlin, Harald Kloser and Roland Emmerich are producing the film and Ute Emmerich is executive producing. Emmerich, Devlin and James Vanderbilt wrote the screenplay.

Comic Book reports that 20th Century Fox has released an official description for the upcoming film, which is slated to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.

"We always knew they were coming back. After 'Independence Day' redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction," the release said.
