Freddie Gray Police Video: Leaked Autopsy Report Concludes Gray Died From 'High-Energy' Injury
A leaked autopsy report reveals Freddie Gray suffered from a "high-energy injury" inside of a Baltimore police van, which led to his death in April.
Gray, a 25-year-old black man, died of a severe and critical neck injury on April 19 exactly seven days after he was apprehended by cops in Baltimore. According to officials, Gray made eye contact with an officer and then fled the scene on the morning of Sunday, April 12. He was then chased by the officers, until they caught up to him, and arrested him for carrying a legal switchblade knife.
However, cellphone footage of Gray's arrest revealed that his legs appeared to be limp as he was being dragged into the police van. Witnesses at the scene also said Gray was screaming in pain and his legs did not seem to be functioning properly.
Weeks after his death, investigators completed an autopsy that concluded Gray suffered a fatal injury while in police custody, according to a copy of the autopsy report obtained exclusively by The Baltimore Sun. The state medical examiner's office also ruled that Gray's death was a homicide since officers failed to follow safety procedures "through acts of omission."
After being thrown into the van onto his stomach, the medical examiner surmised that he may have gotten to his feet before he was then thrown into the wall during an abrupt change in direction. Because he was not wearing a seatbelt while his wrists and ankles were shackled, he was put "at risk for an unsupported fall during acceleration or deceleration of the van."
Six police officers have been indicted in his death and are facing charges that could lead to decades in prison if they are found guilty. The charges include illegal arrest, misconduct, assault and involuntary manslaughter. Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., who was the driver of the van, faces the most serious charge of second-degree depraved heart murder, reported Reuters.
The trial is set to begin in October. The officers have pleaded not guilty.
