In what appeared to be a slam against his father, actor Oliver Hudson took to Instagram last week on Father's Day and declared "Happy Abandonment Day" accompanied by a picture of him and sister Kate with their father Bill Hudson.

Sister Kate Hudson furthered his sentiment by posting a "Happy Father's Day" message to Kurt Russell on Twitter as well.

But Bill Hudson, in an interview with The Daily Mail, has countered their insults and assertions. He told Daily Mail that he had spent Father's Day with his younger 9-year-old daughter who has great affection for her aging father.

He described it as being a wonderful day at the beach, one that he ended with a fantastic dinner before his late night rendezvous on his laptop. That was when he opened it up and found what his son had written about him, as well as his estranged daughter's knife to the back.

Oliver Hudson is Bill's eldest child from his previous marriage to actress Goldie Hawn. They also had Kate together before their split in 1981.

"When we split up, she [Hawn] never had a bad word to say about me," Bill Hudson told Daily Mail.

"But when Kurt came on the scene, the narrative changed and I became the big, bad wolf. I would say to her, 'Goldie, why are you trashing me and saying I'm an absent father when it's simply not the case?' and she'd laugh and go, 'Oh Bill, you know it makes for a better story.'"

He then described that his relationship with his children began to drift away, despite his repeated pleas to Kate and Oliver for him to remain a part of their lives. But over the years, they wanted less and less to do with him and, eventually, became fully estranged from their father, instead optioning Kurt Russell to fill that role.

After years of public torment on the situation, Bill eventually made a life for himself elsewhere, having three more children who he says love him.

But it was the Father's Day messages from his grown-up children that broke his spirit.

"That was like a dagger to the heart," Bill said. "It's time for the truth to come out."

He detailed how his marriage to Hawn fell apart, with her insistence to have an "open relationship" on their wedding night, which he opposed.

"Goldie was having affairs. She told me pretty much on our wedding night she wanted an open marriage, that she couldn't imagine being faithful to one man for the rest of her life," Hudson recounted, which eventually led to their 1981 divorce.

He spoke about staying at home with Oliver and Kate while Hawn went to Europe for a month and had an affair that ended their marriage. He then talked about how Hawn poisoned his kids against him after Russell came onto the scene in 1983. After that, it was pretty much an uphill battle for him to maintain the love and respect of Oliver and Kate.

But at their current ages (Oliver, 38 and Kate, 36), it has become apparent to him that he cannot continue fighting a perpetual battle that he will never win.

"When I read some of the comments on social media, it was so hurtful. People believe the bullsh*t. Well, I'm here to say it's just not true."

Hudson was careful with his word choice, then released what has been weighing on him now for years.

"I say to them now, 'I set you free.'" Hudson said with a breaking voice. "I had five birth children, but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own."

He also went on to say that he would ask them to stop using his last name and make it official -- use Russell's last name, he said.
