Six men were arrested after allegedly heckling Houston-based pastor Joel Osteen during his Sunday sermon, reports ABC-affiliate KTRK.

"Joel Osteen, you're a liar," a protester yelled as the popular nondenominational televangelist began his sermon, according to churchgoer Anwar Richardson.

Richardson posted video of the hecklers and more on Twitter during Sunday's sermon.

"Sitting in Joel Osteen's church and it has been interrupted FOUR times by people against him. This is crazy!" tweeted Richardson, along with a video of the sixth heckler being removed from the church by security. Richardson posted a second video showing Osteen's attempt to calm the congregation after the outbursts.

Richardson told KTRK that he left the service early, fearing something like the Charleston church shooting might happen. "All I could think of is you don't know what's going on, and I just can't wait to find out, so I've gotta get out of there," he said.

The suspects were Church of Wells members, according to Lakewood Church spokesman Donald Iloff Jr. The Church of Wells is a small congregation based in Wells, Texas, with a history of controversy.

Victor Senties, a spokesman for the Houston Police Department, told The Washington Post that the six men were arrested by off-duty police officers working security for the church. The protesters were "said to be protesting against the church pastor and his teaching," according to Senties.

Mark DeRouville, 25; Jacob Gardner, 26; Matthew Martinez, 27; Kevin Fessler, 27; Randall Valdez, 28; and Richard Trudeau, 32, were the hecklers charged with criminal trespassing, according to the criminal complaint. The Church of Wells website lists Gardner as its church elder and Trudeau as a church deacon.

Though Osteen has gained worldwide popularity as a pastor, many Christians consider his teachings of the Prosperity Gospel -- that God will reward devoted followers with earthly wealth -- controversial. Osteen has denied the accusation, saying that "prosperity to me means good relationships, it's having health, it's accomplishing your dreams, it's having money to pay your bills, it's being blessed you so you can be a blessing."

Lakewood Church officials told police that the same suspects "showed up at the church about a month ago" but did not interrupt Osteen's service.

This was not the first time Church of Wells members have been arrested. Trudeau was arrested in New York following allegations he threatened and harassed a woman with whom he has a child in 2014. Gardner was also arrested in 2014 for allegedly causing a public disturbance at a religious event held by many local churches.
