Antonio Zambrano-Montes Pasco Police Shooting Update: New Video, Evidence Released in Washington Immigrant Shooting
Officials released new evidence on Wednesday related to the killing of an immigrant migrant worker in Pasco, Washington, earlier this year.
According to King 5, the Franklin County Prosecutor's Office found new videos, witness recordings, interviews and investigative reports based on the case of Antonio Zambrano-Montes.
Three Pasco police officers fatally shot Zambrano-Montes in February. Witnesses caught the tragic event on personal electronic devices. The incident was also caught on dashcam that was worn on the officers' uniform.
Police officers said they tried calming Zambrano-Montes down after he started pelting large rocks at them. They then shot at him after using a Taser was not effective.
New information involving the case showed the Mexican migrant worker throwing rocks at the officers just moments before he was shot.
Officials conducted interviews with the officers who killed Zambrano-Montes where they admitted to firing 17 shots. The officers involved in the case were not interviewed until about two months after the death.
"I don't understand why it took so long to question the officers," said Franklin County Coroner Dan Blasdel.
Blasdel plans to call for a Coroner's inquest by Thursday although the attorneys representing Zambrano-Montes's family protested against it. "It's my prerogative, even if the family doesn't want one," he said.
The prosecutor's office released hundreds of pages of documents with new information about the case, NBC News reports.
Officer Adrian Alainz recalled the night of the shooting, stating that he feared for his life when he was hit in the leg by a rock, according to the documents.
Officer Adam Wright said he also feared for his life. "He was clear to me that he was gonna throw the rock and his arm movement showed that to me," Wright said. "Once again, I felt like he was wielding potential deadly force if that rock struck us in our head. I decided I needed to act and I shot multiple times."
Officials are still investigating the shooting to figure out if it was justified.
