Rihanna Is Queen: The Artist With the Most Digital Single Awards, Breaks 100 Million Gold Record
The title of "Queen of Hip Hop" may go to Beyoncé, but Rihanna is "Digital Queen." According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the singer has earned more than 100 million gold and platinum single certifications.
The Barbados-born star began her career in 2005 with her single "Pon de Replay" and since then, according to Teen Vogue, has become the only artist to ever surpass "100 million cumulative singles award."
The RIAA list showed Rihanna beats out superstars like Taylor Swift, who falls in second place with 88 million, Katy Perry, Kanye West and even hip-hop veteran Eminem.
To determine this, the RIAA counts both downloads and streams in calculating its certifications, reports The Verge.
The singer has been much talked about this week after she released the music video for her single "Bitch Better Have My Money." The NSFW video is filled with violence, nudity and features the singer kidnapping and torturing a woman to get the woman's partner, who is revealed as the "bitch" she refers to in the song, to give the star money. Rihanna also spends a lot of time partying, lounging in a variety of outfits and doing drugs in the video.
The video was co-directed by french filmmakers Megaforce, who Billboard reports, have made videos for other artist like Madonna and rapper Kid Cudi. One of the directors, Leo Berne, explained to Billboard how the video concept was something the star came up with herself.
"The main idea came from her," said Berne. "We received a few paragraphs around the end of January [describing the story] with the guy who didn't pay her. From that, we had to write the treatment, coming up with how we could change the story and keep her vision. We had to find what was in the middle, and how to finish on the same page."
While the video has surprised many, it isn't out of style for Rihanna to shock people. Since her "Good Girl, Gone Bad" record the star's overall style has evolved into one that is constantly pushing the envelope.
Rihanna made sure to share the news of her record breaking success with her fans on Instagram.
