Fans of A&E's show "The Returned" have heard about the cancellation but don't understand why the network would refuse to air season two.

A&E's English-language remake of the French import "Les Revenants" captured the interest of viewer's with its mysteriously revived living dead, but it wasn't enough to compete with ABC's show "Resurrection," which was also based on a novel called "The Returned," though unrelated to "Les Revenants." The ABC show premiered with an episode titled "The Returned," which didn't help A&E's "The Returned" in its marketing or ratings, reports The A.V. Club.

Variety reports that A&E did not renew "The Returned," in part, because the first three days of DVR viewing averaged 1.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating among viewers under the age of 50. In comparison, A&E's "Bates Motel" garnered 3 million viewers overall and a 1.3 rating from viewers between the ages of 18 and 45. Fans can understand from the comparison why A&E chose to order two more seasons of "Bates Motel" and drop "The Returned."

If viewers would like to keep up with "The Returned's" story, Digital Spy reports that the French version's season two is expected to premiere later this year. Subtitles and English-language versions will be available.

In the French season two, the storyline is set six months after the conclusion of the first run. The new episodes will see Adele about to give birth to Simon's child, while Lena and her father Jerome search desperately for Claire and Camille. A stranger named Berg arrives into town, and he knows more than he claims. Also, a new wave of resurrections are about to occur.

The show will air on Netflix, channel Canal+ and the U.K.'s Channel 4 later this year. Showrunners have not yet announced a launch date.

Season one of the original French series is already available on Netflix, and unlike the A&E version, "Les Revenants" won an International Emmy in 2013 for Best Drama Series.
