NASCAR to Honor Puerto Rican ' Borinqueneers' Military Veterans on July 5 Race
NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. will honor Puerto Rican military veterans for the Sunday Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup Series race.
His Furniture Row-sponsored Chevrolet will carry a logo from Puerto Rico's 65th Infantry Regiment known as the Borinqueneers, according to a press release from the National Puerto Rican Coalition.
The Borinqueneers is an Army unit that participated in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the War on Terror. They have been the only all-Latino unit to fight in the U.S. military. President Barack Obama honored the unit with the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor in June 2014 for their distinguished service.
"It is our honor to celebrate the heroic contributions of our friends from Puerto Rico for their acts of bravery and fight to preserve democracy," said Furniture Row Racing team owner Barney Visser in the press release. He is also a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam.
"To receive the Congressional Gold Medal demonstrates the highest standard of heroism and patriotism that the Borinqueneers have exemplified throughout the history of the 65th Infantry Regiment," he added.
Nearly 20,000 soldiers hold the name of Borinqueneers, NBC News reports.
"For their dedicated service in Korea alone, the Borinqueneers received 10 Distinguished Service crosses, 256 Silver Stars, 606 Bronze Stars, and 2,771 Purple Hearts," said Rafael A. Fantauzzi President and CEO of the National Puerto Rican Coalition.
"These brave soldiers overcame the hurdles of segregation and prejudice while protecting our nation's interests and impacting American history and culture," he added.
The brave soldiers were also honored in the film "The Borinqueneers" directed by Noemi Figueroa Soulet in 2007. The documentary was the first to chronicle the lives of the soldiers, airing on PBS, and showed to more than 850,000 U.S. troops overseas.
Soulet said she created the documentary because there was "very little information out there" and she wanted to show that Puerto Ricans like the Borinqueneers "are the fabric of society."
The veterans will participate in the NASCAR media event on Sunday at 4 p.m. and will be on stage during the pre-race ceremony at 7 p.m.
