Bruno Mars Wins Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album Presented by Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony
Four-time Grammy nominated singer-songwriter-producer Bruno Mars took home the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for Unorthodox Jukebox! at the 56th annual Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles last night. The "Locked Out of Heaven" crooner beat out contenders Lana Del Rey (Paradise), Lorde (Pure Heroine), Robin Thicke (Blurred Lines) and Justin Timberlake (The 20/20 Experience - The Complete Experience). The coveted award was presented by Latin icons, Cuban singer Gloria Estefan and Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony.
Estefan, a nominee for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, wowed onlookers on the red carpet in "a scarlet, strapless, silk crepe gown by Memeka by Gustavo Cadile with a Chantilly lace cape and side detailing."
Anthony, 45, attended the Grammy Awards with his girlfriend, Chloe Green, a 22-year-old British heiress to the Topshop fortune. The couple walked hand-in-hand on the red carpet and cuddled once inside the Staples Center auditorium -- during Willie Nelson and Blake Shelton's performance. The Latin singer wore all black as Green matched in a floor-length dress with gold detail and a matching clutch, according to US Magazine.
Upon receiving the award, Mars tugged on our heartstrings when he dedicated the honor to his mother, who died last year.
"Ma, I know you're watching; I hope you're smiling. I love you very much," he said.
Before the big night, Mars also expressed his gratitude to his fans on Twitter.
Mars was also nominated for Record Of The Year for the Unorthodox Jukebox's lead single and No. 1 hit, "Locked out of Heaven," against: "Radioactive" (Imagine Dragons), "Royals" (Lorde), "Blurred Lines" (Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell), but lost out to winner, "Get Lucky" (Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers).
"Locked Out of Heaven" was also nominated for Song Of The Year against "Just Give Me a Reason" (P!nk featuring Nate Ruess), "Roar" (Katy Perry), "Same Love" (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis), and lost out to winner "Royals" (Lorde).
And lastly, Mars's "When I Was Your Man" was nominated for Best Solo Pop Performance against Sara Bareilles ("Brave"), Katy Perry ("Roar"), Justin Timberlake ("Mirrors") and lost out to New Zeland singer, Lorde ("Royals"), who "seemed shocked" to take home the Grammy for Best Solo Pop Performance. The newcomer paid it forward and gave shout outs to her fellow nominees.
Mars, 28, has penned hits such as CeeLo Green's "Forget You!" and B.o.B's "Nothin' on You." He's also one-third of production trio the Smeezingtons, and has produced for Alicia Keys, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne and Flo Rida.
You could say he was somewhat in hell making "Locked Out of Heaven" for it took "months and months" to create, he explained to the Washington Post.
"People didn't see us going at each other's throats in the studio and pulling out our hair for a song like 'Locked Out of Heaven,' " Mars said. "Trying to get these drums right and figure out a base line ... it being recognized in these monster categories is an extreme honor."
According to the Washington Post, this year marks Mars's fourth nomination for Record Of The Year; this is his third for Song Of The Year. He won his first and only Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance with "Just the Way You Are" in 2011.
Although his debut, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, earned a nomination for Album Of The Year, Mars said he's not disappointed Unorthodox Jukebox wasn't competing for the top prize this year.
"I'm good, man," he said with a laugh. "If I would have asked for anything more, I'd be a jerk. I'm happy."
Named Billboard's top artist last year, Mars continues to be on a role -- he's gearing up for his performance at the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 2. He will also kick off his tour on Apr. 18 in Honolulu.
