'Cinderella' Live Action Film Update: After 'Mulan' Disney Plans on Making a 'Cinderella' Prince Charming Film
Disney looks to continue its live action films with a re-imagining of the Prince Charming story.
According to Variety, the studio has acquired a spec script for "Prince Charming," a live-action comedy revolving around the iconic character.
The script was written by Matt Folger and plot details are vague; sources say that the point of view isn't that of the prince himself but of his brother who never lived up to the family name.
Disney was not the first choice for the script as UTA, who represents Folger, took the script out to studios last week. According to sources a number of studios bid high for the film but Disney finally outbid the others.
The sale of the script is the first for a major studio for Folger, whose prior work was as an assistant for Phil Lord and Chris Miller on "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." The writer is currently developing "Bob: The Musical" at Disney.
Disney has been aggressive with adaptations of famous fairytale characters. Recently the studio had a huge success with "Cinderella" as well as "Maleficent." It also had success with "Oz: The Great and Powerful" and "Alice in Wonderland."
The studio is set to open "The Jungle Book" next year in a live action adaptation as well as a sequel to "Alice in Wonderland." "Beauty and the Beast" is currently in production while "Mulan" was recently announced. Tim Burton is currently on board to adapt "Dumbo."
A Prince Charming film would allow the company to expand its audience and perhaps generate a bigger male audience. Females have been the main focus on the live action films and Disney may be looking for something.
Disney, however, is not the only studio to adapt live action versions. Universal is currently trying to find a director for "The Little Mermaid" while Warner Bros. is scripting "Pinocchio" and has "Pan" being released in the fall.
