Chloë Grace Moretz Tapped to Play Lead Role in ‘Brain on Fire,’ A Film About Her Going Insane [Watch]
Chloë Grace Moretz has been cast in the leading role of the upcoming film adaptation for the Susannah Cahalan autobiographical novel "Brain on Fire," according to Deadline.
The film was originally slated to star Dakota Fanning, but she had been replaced by Moretz, who will portray Cahalan in the film.
Susannah Cahalan is a woman who was a rising star in the world of journalism, working for the New York Post, when she started having serious health issues, which included seizures and physical catatonia. She eventually started hearing voices and her behavior progressed from erratic to violent in no time at all.
Following a hospitalization, Cahalan suffered one misdiagnosis after another, which eventually led her psychosis to a catatonic state following her repetitive outbursts and aggressive behavior.
It wasn't until a specific doctor came in to diagnose her that he got it right and the ensuing treatment led to her full recovery and eventual book that she wrote as a memoir of the ordeal she went through. But she did not suffer from a pre-disposed psychosis, but rather another ailment that had only recently (at the time) been discovered, according to Cahalan's website.
Moretz will be directed in the film by Gerard Barrett ("Glassland") and joined on-screen by co-stars Jenny Slate and Thomas Mann.
Production for the project has not yet begun, but has been scheduled to start principal photography on July 13 in Vancouver. Academy Award winning actress Charlize Theron ("Monster") is also attached to the project as a producer along with A.J. Dix, Beth Kono, Rob Merilees and Lindsay MacAdam.
Broad Green Pictures has partnered with Theron's Denver and Delilah as well as Foundation Features to produce the film.
"We are excited to work with this incredible group of filmmakers and actors to bring Susannah Cahalan's life story to the big screen," Broad Green Pictures' chief creative officer Daniel Hammond told Deadline. "With the help of our partners at Mister Smith, we will be able to share this incredibly moving film with a global audience."
