ESPN Parting Ways With Keith Olbermann, Again
Keith Olbermann has enjoyed another successful run on ESPN, this time filling the role on ESPN 2, which he has always had an incredible talent for. But now, the cable sports network has decided not to renew Olbermann's contract, which expires at the end of this month, according to Deadline.
Although talks with Olbermann over a new contract had broken down, they were not considered out for the count. That is why it was such a shock for the ESPN personality to find this out, especially in the way he did so.
According to a source close to the situation that spoke with Deadline, Olbermann found out about his departure from the network via a tweet posted by sports book author Jim Miller.
"The second @KeithOlbermann era at @espn has come to a close. There will be no new contract. Current deal which was two years ends 7/31," Miller wrote in his Tweet.
One can only imagine being informed of such a life-changing issue as this via a social media post. But it is not the first time a sports personality at ESPN found out that he was being fired that way.
Back in May of this year, Bill Simmons also found out via Twitter that he was being given the boot, by means of no new contract. Deadline also reported on this.
Olbermann has seen a string of bad luck in the past few years, having been let go at MSNBC and Current TV, which were both mainstream news networks that tended to be left-leaning.
"Keith is a tremendous talent who has consistently done timely, entertaining and thought-provoking work since returning to ESPN," ESPN said in an official announcement. "While the show's content was distinctive and extremely high quality, we ultimately made a business decision to move in another direction."
There is no word yet as to where Olbermann intends to land, whether it be sports media, politics or general news media.
