'Saved by the Bell' Screech Actor Dustin Diamond Granted Delay on Start of Jail Sentence
A judge has granted "Saved by the Bell" actor Dustin Diamond's request to delay the start time of his four-month jail sentence pending an appeal for stabbing a man during a bar fight last Christmas.
Diamond, who is best known for playing Samuel "Screech" Powers on the popular '90s sitcom, was ordered to report to a Wisconsin jail on Sunday, June 28. However, his lawyer filed a motion to delay the sentence in order to give the star and his legal team time to file a potential appeal, reported Philly.com. A judge in Ozaukee County Circuit Court then granted his request on July 2 and stayed Diamond's sentence, reports The Associated Press.
According to Diamond's attorney, Thomas Alberti, the case may not be considered for up to two years depending on the appellate docket.
In May, Diamond was convicted of two misdemeanor counts following a three-day jury trial. An Ozaukee County jury found him guilty of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct but cleared him of a felony charge of recklessly endangering public safety.
The incident occurred in December 2014 when the 38-year-old actor was taken into custody by police in Ozaukee County for allegedly stabbing a man with a switchblade during a fight at the Grand Avenue Saloon in Port Washington on Christmas night.
In a criminal complaint, Diamond and his fiancée, Amanda Schutz, 27, stated that they got into a physical altercation with two men and a woman. Court documents show the victim suffered from a non-life-threatening, 1/2-inch wound under his armpit and heavy bleeding. However, Diamond told police he accidentally stabbed one of the men while trying to defend his fiancée.
Schutz was found guilty of one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct and ordered to pay a $500 fine for her involvement in the incident.
Diamond is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 27, reports Fox 6 Now.
